Rev. Dr. Sarah Nave, Pastor
Sarah Nave became the pastor at Covenant Church in May 2006. After graduating with a BA in Religion from Davidson College, Sarah completed a Master of Divinity degree at Fuller Seminary in Pasadena, CA. She met her husband, Dwight, also a Presbyterian pastor, while they were students at Fuller. They were ordained together in Sarah’s home church, Covenant Presbyterian, in Staunton, VA in 1992.
The Naves consider themselves bi-coastal, having served two churches in Virginia, and two churches in California, before arriving at Covenant Church. The Naves have an adult daughter, Chelsea, who lives in Bellevue, WA. There is no empty nest at their house with four rescue cats and two dogs keeping them company.
Sarah’s contemplative leaning yearns to companion the church community to a transforming sense of God’s presence, through worship, prayer and opening to God at its core. Her training as a Spiritual Director (Mercy Center, Burlingame, CA) developed her commitment to helping people pay attention to God through spiritual practices like centering prayer, praising God in song, meditation or walking in sacred spaces. She is passionate about spiritual renewal through worship and noticing God in the midst of everyday life, through deepening awareness and connection with the Holy One who created us and longs to bless us.
Sarah completed her Doctor of Ministry studies with a focus on worship and pastoral care at the Baptist Theological Seminary in Richmond in 2006.
In her 10th year of ministry at Covenant Church, Sarah considers it a joy to serve with a compassionate, authentic, nimble congregation as all seek to grow in Christ, celebrate God’s love, and extend God’s love to others. She is delighted to be part of a welcoming, inclusive church and senses that Covenant Church’s most significant experiences of encountering God’s presence and the Holy Spirit’s work among them are currently unfolding.
Rev. Dwight Nave, Parish Associate
Dwight Nave currently serves as Covenant Church’s Parish Associate while working as the Executive Director of the Tri-Cities Habitat for Humanity in Petersburg. A native of Portland Oregon, Dwight studied for two years at Whitworth College in Spokane, WA, then received a BS in Agriculture from Oregon State University. A skilled house painter and roofer, he moved to California to attend Fuller Seminary, earning a Master of Divinity degree in 1987.
Dwight’s motto for ministry is a delightful invitation to “Hold Things Lightly, Have Fun, and Give God the Glory”. His boundless energy and enthusiasm undergird his leadership roles in Covenant’s Praise Band, Choir, Youth Group and Christian Formation Facilitator for youth and adults.
David Starzer, Music Director
David, Starzer, organist extraordinaire, Oreo purist and all-around nice guy, has won the hearts of choir and congregation alike since August 2014 with his accomplished musicianship and warm demeanor. He infuses the Covenant Church workplace with dark clothes and slightly-cynical humor.
